A good word for the "happiest" dancer I know....Rey Rodriguez
My good friend Rey Rodriguez, after a considerable period of teaching inactivity,
is giving lessons again. Let me tell you why I have enjoyed his instruction in the
past.
Rey Rodrizuez is in the tile business but he's also in the salsa business. He's the director
of a well known salsa troupe here in Houston called Salsa Azteca. Teaching isn't his
primary commercial endeavor and he doesn't do as much of it as other teachers here
in town....for example not as much as Eddy Deynes (AKA: Salsa Eddy).
But if salseros have distinctive personalities, I'd have to say that Reys' is that he is
undoubtedly one of the "happiest", most playful salseros you'll ever see. Rey once
told me that he doen't go out for contests and such....he just dances for fun.
When I say he 'dances for fun', I'm not saying he isn't good because, matter of fact,
he's very good. He just, literally, has a so much fun dancing salsa that it
shows very obviously.
I used to take his intermediate level lessons when he was teaching at a Taekwondo
studio owned by a friend of his on Stella Link at 610. Aside from the fact that Rey
taught short patterns rather than long ones(which I was more comfortable with at
that time), he also is a very good teacher. He pays attention to each and every
student, he's articulate, and yet he is also creative in what he teaches. Going to
his lessons was always a highlight of my week.
Eventually that studio became unavailable for salsa lessons so Rey had to cease
his lessons up in this Houston 'neck of the woods'. I was very sad to hear that,
back then, but it was understandable because Rey actually resides in the Pasadena
area. He continued to work with his dance team down there but he wasn't doing
any teaching for general students like me.
Well, Rey is back in the 'retail' teaching business again. His classes are going
to be in the Pasadena area so for that reason, and others, I might not be able
to participate.....but I sure wish I could.
But YOU have a golden opportunity, again, to take lessons from Rey. If you
feel like you'd like to make some faster progress in your salsa technique, and
if it's convenient to you to go to Pasadena, I'd highly recommend you contact
Rey about his new class schedule. I promise you'll enjoy the experience.
